Convergent Digital Media Incentive

The Convergent Digital Media Incentive (CDMI) is designed to support convergent or second screen digital media production in Canada. This program is part of the Canada Media Fund’s (CMF) Convergent Stream. Funding from this program is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is targeted to high-value projects, requiring a minimum $100K budget. The $14.4M budget was fully utilized in 2013-2014.

The CDMI supported 63 projects in 2013-2014, a decline of 24 from 2012-2013, due to growth in budget size. CDMI accounted for 59.9% of convergent DM funding, a decline from last year’s 68.2%. The average commitment in this incentive was $229K while the average budget was $404K, 3.5 times higher than the average budget for convergent DM components that did not access the CDMI. This program triggered production budgets valued at $25.4M.

Documentary projects captured 36.4% of English CDMI funding, triggering $7.5M in production activity and 8 projects, highest of all language-genre categories, continuing last year’s trend. An average budget for a CDMI-funded Documentary project was $941K. English Children’s & Youth and French Drama received the next largest portions of funding, at $2.9M and $2.7M, respectively. Diverse-language projects received $973K from the CDMI, triggering total budgets of $1.6M for 3 projects.
