International Coproductions
The Canada Media Fund (CMF) supports international coproductions through both its Convergent and Experimental streams. In 2013-2014, international treaty coproductions represented a small portion of CMF convergent funded projects (4.3% of all funding). There were two international coproductions funded through the 2013-2014 Experimental Stream.
At a total of $13.1M, funding to international convergent coproductions increased by 77.0% from 2012-2013, although the number of projects decreased by two.
The majority of convergent coproductions were with France (8) and the United Kingdom (4) and Australia (4), as has been the trend in recent years. New coproducing partners included Austria, Israel, and South Africa. Ireland coproduced a big-budget drama for the fourth consecutive year, returning on Vikings II. Singapore returned to coproduction with 1 project.
Funding to minority convergent coproductions increased $0.7M from 2012-2013, however, there was a $5.0M increase (96.2% change) in majority co-production funding from 2012-2013 to 2013-2014.
There were two Experimental-funded international coproductions in 2013-2014, both with France and one of them benefitting from the new incentive for digital media international coproductions. In previous years, there were two coproductions with France in 2012-2013 and one with France in 2010-2011.
A pilot incentive in 2013-2014, the Digital Media Coproduction Incentive funded two international coproductions, one Experimental stream project and one convergent digital media, with $100K each to support production costs.
